As far as performance goes, our review unit featured 4GB of RAM with the 32GB eMMC hard drive and I honestly wouldn’t recommend going with anything less. There were absolutely no performance issues with this configuration and everything from the Google apps to video watching and music streaming ran as expected without any hiccups. The Chromebook 11 comes with a total of four USB ports, an impressive amount for a Chromebook at any price. There are two USB-C ports on our review unit, either of which can accept the power adapter plug. There are also two USB Type-A ports, useful for connecting a wired mouse or perhaps an external drive to supplement the Dell's internal storage. Unfortunately, there's no SD or microSD card slot, so you can't expand storage that way.

The Chromebook R 13 came in at an impressive 11 hours, the Chromebook Flip C302CA lasted for 8:52 and the Chromebook 3180 lasted for 8:55. While the Chromebook doesn’t look like much, it definitely has a sturdy feel to it and the extra features like the rubberized edge and spill-resistant keyboard add an extra kid-proof level to this computer. Display Viewing angles were decent for individual use, but forget about gathering a group around the screen. Colors started to fade as we moved more than 45 degrees to the left or right.

Google is planning to add support for Android apps to future versions of Chrome OS and some Chromebooks -- but not the 3189 -- can already do it, if users install a beta version of the operating system. However, with its touch screen and convertible form factor, Dell's laptop should do a great job running Android software when the time comes. You successfully recovered your Chrome computer, but now you cannot use your USB or SD card with Windows. Note: When you create a recovery flash drive, be aware the tool may not be available in all languages.

However, if you want a rugged Chromebook that can last through a full school day, the Dell Chromebook 3180 is a strong choice. The screen brightness was fine for indoor use, measuring 223 nits, compared with 291.8 nits for the Chromebook Flip C302CA and 210 nits for the Chromebook 3180. But it was well below the category average of 301.8, so you wouldn't want to use it near a sunny window. You successfully recovered your Chrome computer, but now Windows does not recognize the whole size of the USB or SD card that is used for recovery. One of the more important features of a Chromebook — or any laptop — is its battery life. Dell claims the Chromebook 11 3180 should get up to 10 hours on a single charge and we definitely hit that mark a few times during testing. As we’ve mentioned in the past, battery life does depend on what you’re doing and depending on our activities (a combination of using Google apps, watching videos, and streaming music) we averaged between 7 1/2 and just over 10 hours during testing. Price/Value The touch screen was very responsive. When in tent or tablet mode, tapping on a text box brings up an on-screen keyboard, which was awkward to type on but got the job done for short inputs. However, it's not the sort of thing a student would want to use for any length of time.

The Dell Chromebook 3180 has just enough power to get a student through the school day and an extracurricular activity. When we ran our battery test (continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi), the 3180 lasted 8 hours and 55 minutes. That's better than the 8:10 average and the Chromebook C202's runtime of 8:23. However, the N22 Touch Chromebook and the N7 Chromebook lasted much longer, at 10:26 and 10:38, respectively. Dell claims that the keyboard can withstand up to 12 ounces of spilled liquid, so any small glass of milk or juice that gets tipped over shouldn't be a problem. If there is more significant damage, the self-contained keyboard can actually be lifted right out of the laptop without replacing the palm rest. This feature is mainly for IT staffers at schools, since service for an individual Chromebook 11 that you buy yourself wouldn't likely be cost-effective given the low list price. The sound from the dual speakers situated on the bottom of the device is loud enough for normal usage, although it’s on the tinny side. Bass is not a feature you’ll associate with the Chromebook 11 3180 and you won’t be filling the room with wall-to-wall sound. With all of the different ways you can configure the 3189 (tablet, tent, flat and normal laptop modes), the viewing angles are very important, and the 3189 delivers. The screen has wide viewing angles from the sides, top and bottom - great for having a bunch of students gathered around one computer for collaboration. The Chromebook 3180 stayed pleasantly cool throughout our tests. After we streamed video for 15 minutes, the touchpad measured 78 degrees Fahrenheit, while the keyboard and underside hit just 88 and 94 degrees, respectively. All of those temperatures are below our 95-degree comfort threshold. The original Google Pixel Chromebook is still a very capable laptop, but because it’s last OS update was in 2018, it can’t even watch movies on Netflix anymore. Nearly expired Chromebooks are still being sold How does this adequate performance translate to benchmark results? Compared to competitors, the Chromebook 11 offers middling performance on tests like WebXPRT 3, CrXPRT, JetStream 2, and PCMark for Android. That's exactly what we expect from a Chromebook at this price.(See more about how we test laptops.) Kids can watch educational videos, or even movies, on the Chromebook 3180, but don't even think about using it as a stereo. When I listened to "Bohemian Rhapsody," the highs were tinny, and the vocals became distorted at only 75 percent volume. Even at full volume, the sound wasn't loud enough to fill a room.
