About this deal

Great question. You have two options for serving this Apple Slice and both are equally delicious, trust me. Measure the cream in a jug. Add the egg, sugar and brandy (or vanilla) and mix well until smooth. Slowly pour this mixture evenly over the apples, letting it seep through the layers. I’m going to show you how to make a buttery coconut crust (from scratch), and a tart apple cinnamon filling. Finished with sour cream and a sprinkling of cinnamon sugar, this slice is then baked to perfection. Spread sour cream out into one even layer over the apples. Mix together cinnamon and sugar. Sprinkle cinnamon sugar over the top. Bake for 20-22 minutes. how do I serve it?

Once your easy apple slice has baked until golden and cooked through, leave it to cool in the tin then slice into large pieces. Serve your apple slice just as it is or with whipped cream. You could even have it as a dessert and serve it warm with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream. There seem to be many ways to prevent apples from browning. Salt water seems to be the best solution, but you would need to wash the salt off the apple afterward if you don’t want the salty taste. I wanted to call these Apple Pie Bars because that’s exactly what they taste like. But unlike pie, they’re super easy to make. And with a one-year-old at my feet, easy is what I’m all about right now.

Canned/ tinned apples: make for an easy slice. A 400gm (14oz) tin is the perfect amount. Look for sliced apples for pies and desserts. At a pinch you could try using apple pie filling but I have not tested the recipe with this alternative. I’ve gone for the crunchy sugar topping because I just love the added sweetness against the sour apples and I’m a huge fan of crunchy toppings! Think brûlée and crumble. Apples contain an enzyme called polyphenol oxidase (PPO). When you slice open an apple, the PPO reacts with the oxygen in the air and enzymatic browning occurs. The chemical reaction between the PPO and oxygen produces melanin, which is what gives the apple flesh the brown color.

Salt water prevented the oxidation of the apple slice because it surrounded the apple cells with a saltier environment than the inside of the cells. As a result, water moves outside of the cells through osmosis in an attempt to equalize the concentration of salt and water inside and outside of the cell. You can enjoy it warm straight from the oven as the perfect cosy dessert, or let it chill and slice it into bite-sized pieces for morning or afternoon tea. Step 4 - Raise the oven temperature to 180C/350F. Then spoon over with the sour cream mixture over the apples and then sprinkle with cinnamon sugar. Bake for 25 minutes or until set. Cool and then chill in the fridge and then cut up. Serve chilled (this needs to be stored in the fridge). Before you cut into the apple, observe the outside. If possible, compare a few different apples to see how they are similar and different. Kids can identify many of the parts of an apple including the peel, stem, and calyx without cutting an apple open. Cutting Open the Apple To bump up the flavour, we add a touch of cinnamon, nutmeg and fresh lemon zest to the apples. Hello apple pie filling! The final touch, is a hefty layer of sour cream (full fat only please) and a generous sprinkling of cinnamon sugar.

Why do apples turn brown? I bet your curious child has asked you that at one point or another. And perhaps he also challenged with a follow-up question – how do you prevent the apple from turning brown?

If you like a little spice in your baking you can use the option of adding cinnamon and allspice. You could also add a pinch of nutmeg if you like that flavour, I think that most sweet spices would work well in this recipe or if you prefer a plain taste just leave them out. Plain flour:is best in this recipe. You can also use all-purpose flour. It's important to use flour that does not have any rising agents as we will be adding our own in the right amounts. This apple filling uses canned apples to mimic the flavours and textures of real apple pie. Here’s what you’ll need: Hypothesis: Dipping the apple slices in a liquid will slow the browning process. Have your child predict which liquid will work the best and record it on the free apple oxidation experiment worksheet. Cinnamon & cloves: ground cinnamon and cloves adds some warming spices to this recipe. You could also put in other apple pie spices such as nutmeg, allspice or mixed spice. In a separate bowl or stand mixer cream the room-temperature butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add the vanilla extract and egg and mix well. Add the dry ingredients and mix lightly until well mixed but still crumbly.

Apple slices are such a wonderful Australian classic cake shop treat. It starts with a layer of delicious coconut cake at the base and then a filling of apples and then a topping of cinnamon dusted sour cream! This is one of the tastiest, easiest bakes to make and is deliciously nostalgic (and a great way to use up and eat apples). This is a pushy recipe Dear Reader! As you can see, there are many more experiments you can perform after this one. For example, what other fruits turn brown when exposed to air? Will salt work as well on those fruits in preventing them from browning? This recipe was inspired by a late afternoon stroll down a street. At a crossing I paused and looked up and saw one of those old fashioned bakeries that sell apple slices, custard tarts, vanilla slices and those very random frogs. I went in and bought one and it was delicious, imbued with memories I had thought were long gone. I was so excited to make it that I woke up early the next morning and made it. I'm not an early morning person but a couple of weeks ago I had to wake up early for an event and that turned out to be a most fortuitous thing indeed. It was early and Mr NQN had just left for work. Bleary eyed, I stumbled out of the bedroom and saw Teddy asleep in the lounge room wrapped up in a blanket. I said good morning to him and gave him a kiss and then I turned my head as I heard a strange hissing noise. It was coming from the kitchen. Once you cut open an apple you will find that the center of an apple is hard compared to the flesh. This middle part of the apple is called the core. Inside the core the seeds are held.
